Letter to UN Secretary-General Mr Antonio Guterres on Forthcoming General Election in Bangladesh

12 November 2022

His Excellency Mr Antonio Guterres
Secretary-General
United Nations Headquarters
New York, US

Re : Forthcoming General Election in Bangladesh.

Excellency,
We are a neutral and independent non-governmental organisation with an objective to promote human rights and advance social economic conditions of over 13 million NRBs (Non Resident Bangladeshi expatriates) worldwide; in a peaceful, just and fair world.

We are writing to you regarding the forthcoming general election of Bangladesh, as you represent the world’s only truly global organisation regarded as the guardian of international peace and security, as the promoter of fundamental human rights and as the promoter of Democracy and as the protector of international law.

You will be aware that the last two elections elections in Bangladesh held in 2014 and in 2018 were hugely criticized at home and abroad for large scale fraudulence, intimidation, abduction and killing. It is feared that the forthcoming election of 2023 will have the same uncertainty and violence perpetrated equally by the ruling party as well as by their opposition parties. Any such trouble will destroy the development achieved and innocent public will suffer most.

In other words, the general public will bear the brunt of these unwanted unrests as seen in the two previous ones. Due to the geo-political existence of Bangladesh in between the two great nations of China and India and more so, due to the recent war between Ukraine and Russia; the Bangladesh election of 2023 has already become a matter of great interest in the West and generally, in the world. We in the Voice for Global Bangladeshis (VfGB), believe that peace and tranquility must prevail in Bangladesh to ensure a free, fair and participatory election. We believe that this can only happen under the direct supervision of the UN.

We also believe that the Voice for Global Bangladeshis, as an independent neutral body, who really cares for a free and fair election, can be a useful support to UN, to the present ruling Government in Bangladesh and its Election Commission. In VfGB we have the collection of most successful NRB leaders in every areas of community affairs, legal affairs, business, education and health. If required, we can send a strong team of VfGB Executives who can serve as neutral observers for the UN.

We urge you to fully utilise the UN Secretariat, the Security Council and the International Court of Justice in order to deliver peace and security, fundamental human rights and protection of the international law to the people of Bangladesh. We shall be most grateful if you allow a small team of VfGBs to come to UN New York Head office to meet you and discuss the matter further. We wish you good health and further success in your work.

Thanking you.
Respectfully yours,
Dr. Hasanat M. Husain MBE,
President, Voice for Global Bangladeshis VfGB.
